President-elect Donald J. Trump has chosen former Wisconsin congressman and Fox Business host Sean Duffy to lead the Transportation Department. Trump praised Duffy as a “tremendous and well-liked public servant” with the experience needed to oversee the department’s vast budget and work force.
Duffy, who served in Congress from 2011 to 2019 as a Wisconsin Republican, resigned in 2019 to care for a newborn daughter with a birth defect. He joined Fox News Media as a contributor in 2020 and currently co-hosts a show on Fox Business.
If confirmed, Duffy will be tasked with rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure, overseeing the struggling Federal Aviation Administration and Federal Railroad Administration, and managing funds from the 2021 infrastructure law. Trump credited Duffy with clearing legislative hurdles to build a major road and bridge project in Minnesota during his congressional tenure.
A Wisconsin native, Duffy began his political career as a district attorney before winning his congressional seat. He is known for bipartisan efforts, such as co-sponsoring legislation with Senator Amy Klobuchar to support the St. Croix River bridge project connecting Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Duffy’s appointment comes as the Biden administration prioritizes infrastructure rebuilding, making his experience and relationships built during his time in Congress crucial for leading the Transportation Department towards a new era of travel and infrastructure development.
