Man convicted of murdering 4 family members and pregnant woman during altercation over curfew as a teenager

Raymond Childs III, an Indianapolis man, was found guilty of six counts of murder in the shooting deaths of five people, including his family members and a pregnant woman, in January 2021. The victims included his father, stepmother, stepsister, and his brother’s girlfriend who was nearly due to give birth. The attack followed an argument about Childs staying out late. Childs, who was 17 at the time of the killings, was arrested a day after the incident. His first trial was declared a mistrial after a witness confronted him in front of the jury. The recent conviction came after a five-day trial where the jury deliberated for about three hours.

Prosecutors stated that Childs went from room to room, methodically shooting the victims. His 15-year-old brother was also shot but managed to escape the house. The Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears, in a statement, said that the verdict provided justice for the victims and commended the dedication of the trial team, law enforcement, and witnesses.

Childs faces 40 to 65 years in prison for each murder count, 20 to 40 years for attempted murder, and one to six years for carrying a handgun without a license. His sentencing is scheduled for January 7. Childs’ attorney has not yet provided a comment on the conviction.
