A group of Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin has introduced a new bill that aims to limit government-sponsored divisions by restricting the flying of certain flags outside state or local institutions. The bill, introduced by Rep. Jerry L. O’Connor, Rep. Dave Murphy, Rep. Rob Brooks, Rep. Joy Goeben, Sen. Dan Feyen, and Sen. Cory Tomczyk, prohibits flags other than the U.S. flag, Wisconsin flag, local flags, and U.S. armed forces and POW/MIA flags from being displayed.
The lawmakers cited flags of various political movements or social causes, such as MAGA, pride, heterosexual, CSA, Second Amendment rights, BLM, ALL Lives Matter, Antifa, Pro-Life, and Pro-Choice, as leading to divisiveness. They emphasized that the bill does not restrict private citizens or Native American tribes from flying any flags they choose.
Sen. Feyen argued that government buildings should remain neutral and not appear to favor one ideology over another. He stated that the bill aims to offer equal treatment to all Wisconsinites. Sen. Tomczyk criticized the governor for using flags flown over taxpayer-funded buildings to divide the people of Wisconsin, calling it shameful and embarrassing.
The lawmakers stated that they were responding to requests from Wisconsin residents to address the issue of divisive flags in public spaces. They believe that flags on government buildings should not be divisive and should not support one ideology over another. The bill aims to promote unity and inclusivity by restricting the types of flags that can be flown on publicly-funded institutions.
