Ben Wikler, the chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, is reportedly considering a run for the top leadership position in the national party. A source close to Wikler has stated that he will make a decision after Thanksgiving. If Wikler decides to run and is elected, he would be the first DNC chair from Wisconsin in modern political history.
Despite President-elect Donald Trump winning Wisconsin by a narrow margin, Democrats have seen success in the state, with victories in statewide offices and significant gains in the Senate and Assembly. The Wisconsin Democratic Party has also significantly outraised the state’s Republican Party, which could work in Wikler’s favor if he chooses to enter the race.
So far, Minnesota Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley have officially entered the race for national party chair. The election for top leadership positions in the Democratic Party, including chair, is scheduled for Feb. 1.
If Wikler does decide to run for the national party chair position, his experience and the successes of the Wisconsin Democratic Party could make him a strong contender. While Wikler has not made any public statements on the matter, political insiders are speculating that he could be a viable candidate for the role.
