Tragic Accident Claims Life of Missing Wisconsin Man

Ben Oberto, a 45-year-old wine salesman from New Berlin, Wisconsin, was found deceased following a tragic car accident in the Chicago area. Oberto had been reported missing after he failed to return home Wednesday night after a work appointment in Crystal Lake. His last known communication with his wife, Laura Leatherberry, indicated he would arrive in time to tuck their son into bed, but he never made it.

After 60 hours of searching, authorities managed to track Oberto’s phone to Rosemont, near Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, where his overturned Subaru Impreza was located in a submerged creek. New Berlin police officers, aided by the Illinois State Police, confirmed the identity of the body found inside the vehicle as Oberto.

According to Laura, Oberto’s car veered off the freeway while navigating a challenging and dark curve during inclement weather. The ramp leading from I-90 eastbound to I-294 northbound is known for its sharp turn. Police reports corroborated his wife’s account, stating that it was a single-vehicle accident.

Laura expressed her heartbreak on social media, reflecting on the pain of the past two days while also acknowledging the overwhelming love and support from their community during this ordeal. Oberto’s family and his employer, Massanois LLC, a New York City-based wine importer, released statements mourning his loss, highlighting his vibrant spirit and generosity.

Oberto leaves behind two children, Collette and Augie, and is remembered as a devoted father, husband, and friend. His community is now uniting to honor his life and the impact he had on those around him. The investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
