White House announces additional $8bn in aid as Zelenskyy meets with officials – Live updates on Ukraine war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude towards the US for announcing nearly $8 billion in military aid, stating that this assistance will help Ukraine achieve victory against Russia. Zelenskyy emphasized that the aid will be used efficiently and transparently to work towards a common goal of achieving peace and security.

President Joe Biden also announced a surge in assistance to Ukraine, including a significant amount of military aid and long-range munitions. The UK announced new sanctions on Russian ships, aiming to restrict its oil exports. Biden further declared a high-level summit of Ukraine’s allies in Germany to coordinate support for Ukraine’s defence against Russia.

Amid the ongoing conflict, Zelenskyy warned the UN that Russia was planning to attack Ukrainian nuclear power plants, emphasizing the potential for disaster. His calls for unity and support from world leaders were echoed, with Zelenskyy urging against alternative peace initiatives that could enable Russia’s aggression. The escalating nuclear rhetoric from Russian President Vladimir Putin was also a matter of concern, with the Kremlin indicating a willingness to use nuclear weapons in response to conventional attacks.

In light of the developments, Zelenskyy is set to visit the White House to present his “victory plan” to Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, coupled with the geopolitical dynamics and international support, underscores the need for diplomatic efforts towards achieving peace and stability in the region.
