New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted following a federal corruption investigation, as reported by the New York Times. It is unclear what specific charges Adams will face, but he will be the first sitting mayor of the city to be criminally charged once the indictment is released. Federal prosecutors are expected to provide more details on the charges on Thursday.
This news comes after some of Adams’ closest aides and advisers were under federal investigation, with agents raiding the homes of high-ranking officials within his administration, including the NYPD commissioner. The Adams administration has not commented on the situation.
The federal investigations first became public in November 2023 when FBI agents raided the Brooklyn home of Adams’ chief fundraiser. Despite the investigations, Adams had previously stated that he followed the law and expressed shock at the possibility of illegal activity within his campaign.
Shortly after the initial raid, FBI agents seized the mayor’s electronic devices, which was confirmed later by his attorney. Then, in September, federal investigators also seized devices from other high-ranking officials within Adams’ administration both inside and outside of City Hall.
Although federal prosecutors have not discussed the specifics of the investigations, sources familiar with the cases have mentioned inquiries involving campaign fundraising, influence peddling of the police and fire departments, as well as possible illegal activities of senior aides and their relatives.
