Poll Reveals Mixed Sentiments on Evers’ Third Term Bid
A recent Marquette poll presents a challenging outlook for Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers as he contemplates a potential third term in office. The survey indicates that 55% of voters oppose Evers running again, compared to 42% who would support him. While these numbers might seem alarming, they reflect a deeper political landscape.
Evers’ approval ratings, standing at just below 50%, indicate substantial discontent, particularly among independent voters—only 37% of whom favor another Evers run. Importantly, while 83% of Democrats support his candidacy, this strong partisan backing contrasts sharply with the lukewarm reception among independents, a critical voter demographic in the swing state.
Poll director Charles Franklin observed that Evers’ numbers, although concerning, aren’t definitively negative. Comparatively, they are more favorable than those for former Governor Scott Walker at similar timelines. Notably, a generational divide among Democratic voters suggests that younger demographics are less likely to support Evers, highlighting a potential risk for his campaign.
Beyond Evers, the poll illustrates a broader climate of political dissatisfaction in Wisconsin, with no surveyed politician receiving a net positive favorability rating. The Democratic Party’s struggles are particularly striking, revealing an 18% favorable rating among independents.
Interestingly, some policy positions, particularly those promoted by Democrats, still resonate with Wisconsin voters—issues such as Medicaid for new mothers and marijuana legalization enjoy over 65% support. Conversely, contentious topics around education, such as funding mechanisms and standards, remain divisive and confusing.
As the political landscape evolves, Evers faces both opportunities and challenges as he navigates his decision for a third term, amid a backdrop of increasing voter skepticism toward established political figures and policies.
