Tragic Passing of 20-Year-Old South Dakota State RB Nate White, Former Wisconsin Transfer

Tragic Loss: South Dakota State’s Nate White Dies at 20

Brookings, SD – The South Dakota State University athletics community is mourning the untimely death of sophomore running back Nate White, who passed away at the age of 20. The university announced the news on Wednesday, though the cause of death has yet to be disclosed.

Nate White, who transferred from the University of Wisconsin earlier this year, was a promising athlete. He joined the Jackrabbits program after spending two seasons with the Badgers, where he was noted for his talent but did not see any game action. As part of SDSU, White had recently shifted from wide receiver to running back, expected to contribute significantly to the team in the upcoming 2025 season.

"Jackrabbit football is a brotherhood, and today we are all hurting with the shocking news of Nate White’s loss," stated SDSU head coach Dan Jackson. "Nate impacted our program with his hard work, determination, and positive spirit. We grieve with his family and will honor his memory throughout this coming season."

White had an impressive high school career at Milwaukee’s King High School, where he was recognized as a three-star recruit. He ranked as Wisconsin’s top prospect in the 2023 class and was nationally recognized as the No. 55 running back. His accolades included second-team all-state honors in 2022, with a remarkable season totaling 1,345 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns.

Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell added, "News of Nate’s tragic passing has been sad and difficult to comprehend for all of our Wisconsin Badger football family. We remember Nate as a friend and teammate and stand in support of his family and loved ones."

Nate White’s impact on those around him will be remembered as the community comes together during this difficult time.
