Medford School District Approves Dual-Sport Participation for Student Athletes
In a landmark decision, the Medford School District board has voted to allow student athletes to participate in two sports simultaneously, starting in the 2025-2026 school year. The decision came following extensive discussions and multiple motions during a recent board meeting, with board members split on the implications and practicality of introducing dual-sport options.
The policy stipulates that students must meet academic requirements and draft a contract outlining commitments on schedules, practices, and games among coaches, parents, and players. Students will have to identify a primary sport, which will take precedence during scheduling conflicts.
The issue was initially raised by Bella Lemke, an incoming freshman, who expressed interest in participating in both curling and girls hockey. Activities director Ryan Pilgrim noted that while previous inquiries about dual participation faced challenges, five nearby districts have successfully implemented similar policies. This change aims to bolster participation numbers in programs facing declining enrollment, such as curling, which has struggled in recent years despite its long history of success in the district.
The board’s discussion revealed deep philosophical divides, with some members voicing concerns over potential academic impacts and others advocating for expanded opportunities for students. Ultimately, the motion to allow dual-sport athletes passed with a narrow 5-3 majority, contingent on a review next year.
Additionally, the board addressed other matters, such as increasing substitute teacher pay and updates on school health services. With ongoing construction improvements anticipated, the district looks forward to enhancing its educational environment while supporting students’ interests in athletics.
