Increased Security at Wisconsin Capitol After Targeted Shootings in Minnesota
Madison, WI — Following a tragic shooting incident in Minnesota that claimed the lives of former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and left another lawmaker wounded, the Wisconsin State Capitol has ramped up security measures. Authorities revealed that the suspect, Vance Boelter, had a hitlist featuring 11 Wisconsin lawmakers, including Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin.
A spokesperson for Baldwin confirmed she had been informed by law enforcement about the threat. Prosecution statements assert that Boelter meticulously planned his attacks, conducting surveillance on his targets and even disguising himself as a police officer. He surrendered to authorities after a two-day manhunt, having been located in nearby woods.
In light of the threats, Wisconsin Senate Sergeant at Arms Timothy La Sage announced enhanced security protocols, including increased situational awareness and strengthened access controls. “The safety of those who serve, work, and visit the Capitol is my top priority,” La Sage stated.
