Madison Youth Embark on Race Amity Journey

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A group of nine youth from Madison is set to embark on a transformative two-week bicycle journey from Madison, WI to Montgomery, AL. Accompanied by 20 participants, the group will make stops in cities including Rockford, IL, and Nashville, TN, to engage in community gatherings focused on promoting race amity—building friendships across racial lines.

Facilitator Kate Vestlie emphasizes that this initiative is about fostering interracial friendships, stating, “Race amity means building friendships across racial lines.” The young riders have prepared presentations to discuss the significance of race amity and the barriers that exist within their communities. As 15-year-old Samyiah Myers noted, the initiative aims to change perceptions and promote inclusivity.

Throughout the journey, they will learn about history and community-building while cultivating their personal growth. Vestlie likens the experience to a "rock tumbler," suggesting that each participant will emerge polished with newfound potential.

The adventure kicks off this Saturday, with the first stop in Rockford, IL, as the youth aim to spark awareness and action in every community they visit. The trip serves as a platform for youth empowerment and community connection across the nation.
