House Passes H.R.4, Rescissions Act of 2025, Targeting Public Broadcasting Funds
COULEE REGION, Wis. (WXOW) – In a narrow vote, the House of Representatives approved H.R.4, the Rescissions Act of 2025, which proposes significant funding cuts to public broadcasting. The legislation passed by a margin of 214 to 212.
The Rescissions Act outlines a total of $9.4 billion in budget cuts, predominantly affecting international public health programs, which face an $8.3 billion reduction. Notably, $1.1 billion is earmarked for public broadcasting, targeting the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). All six Republican representatives from Wisconsin, including Representative Derrick Van Orden, supported the funding cuts, citing concerns that public broadcasting entities like NPR and PBS have shifted to a politically biased agenda. “American taxpayers should not be forced to fund any organization that hates America,” remarked Rep. Van Orden.
Opposition came from every House Democrat, including Wisconsin’s own Mark Pocan and Gwen Moore, both of whom voted to preserve funding for the CPB, arguing that public media is vital for providing unbiased information to the public.
If enacted, the $1.1 billion reduction would eliminate funding allocation to public broadcasting for the next two budget years, according to the Associated Press. The Rescissions Act now progresses to the Senate for further deliberation and voting.
The outcome of this legislation is poised to have significant implications for public media, stirring ongoing debate about the role of government funding in broadcasting and the perceived political bias within these institutions. As developments unfold, the impact on local and national broadcasting services remains a key concern for many constituents.
