Despite having deployed five times and leading troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, he discovered that his moving costs would exceed the $40,000 benefit allotted to most retirees because he chose to extend his service into the Reserve after being eligible to retire in 2022. This led to a sharp emotional and financial distress for Levine and his wife, Ginger, as they relied on this benefit to move from their on-post housing at West Point to a new home in Virginia. Currently, they are paying a total of $7,200 monthly in rent between two locations, leaving them in a financial bind.
The couple estimated that moving their belongings would cost around $42,000, which they cannot afford. To save money, Ginger has been collecting used boxes from neighbors, feeling embarrassed at the situation.
