Wisconsin Athletics Faces NCAA Sanctions for Recruiting Violations
MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin has been placed on one year’s probation and fined $25,000 by the NCAA following an investigation into recruiting violations. The inquiry revealed that nine coaches and staff members made impermissible phone calls to recruits in 2023, leading to a designation of Level II violations.
Former defensive line coach Greg Scruggs and former director of player personnel Max Stienecker received one-year show cause orders. Scruggs currently serves as an assistant defensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers, while Stienecker works at USC as the executive director of personnel.
Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell and special teams coach Matt Mitchell are prohibited from recruiting communications with high school prospects during a specified period. The NCAA found that a total of 139 impermissible calls were made to 48 prospects, with 60 of these calls lasting one minute or less.
The compliance violations were self-reported by the university after they surfaced through internal monitoring systems. Wisconsin’s administration expressed a commitment to integrity and accountability in their operations, emphasizing proactive measures taken to resolve the matter amid changing recruiting rules.
