Wisconsin Immigrant Released on Bond After False Claims of Threatening Trump

Madison, Wis. – A Wisconsin man accused of threatening to assassinate former President Donald Trump has been released from jail on bond, three weeks after his arrest by federal immigration agents. Ramón Morales Reyes, 54, was accused based on a letter he allegedly authored, a claim quickly debunked by local authorities who found he could not write in English.

Morales Reyes was targeted by Demetric D. Scott, the perpetrator behind a violent 2023 attack where Reyes’ bike was stolen. Scott forged the threatening letter to eliminate his own charges, with Morales Reyes set to testify against him in an upcoming trial.

Following his release on a $7,500 bond set by an immigration judge, Morales Reyes expressed his intent to contest deportation with the assistance of a lawyer. The married father of three U.S. citizens, he has been an immigrant from Mexico since the 1980s. Although he applied for a U visa recognizing victims of crime, the process can take years.

While Homeland Security has withdrawn the assassination threat, they will still pursue an immigration case against Morales Reyes for alleged unlawful entry into the U.S. His story has drawn the attention of local immigrant rights advocates, who have rallied for his support.
