Wisconsin DNR Emphasizes ATV and UTV Safety as Riding Season Begins

MADISON, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – As temperatures rise in Wisconsin, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging ATV and UTV enthusiasts to prioritize safety. With the sport’s growing popularity, officials are keen to ensure both new and experienced riders are well-informed about safety protocols before hitting the trails.

The DNR underscores that simple oversights—like forgetting a helmet or making a reckless maneuver—can lead to accidents. Rob McConnell, Vice President of Wisconsin ATV/UTV and President of the Off-road Vehicle Advisory Council, highlights the importance of proper safety measures, especially concerning child riders. “It’s crucial to use the appropriate vehicle and wear the right protective gear. Training is essential, and children should not be riding adult-sized units; they need vehicles that are smaller and easier to control,” he advises.

The DNR is not trying to deter anyone from enjoying the recreational sport but is instead focused on fostering a culture of safety and responsibility among riders. As the season ramps up, they encourage everyone to be mindful of safety practices to ensure a fun and enjoyable experience without undue risks.

For more information on ATV/UTV safety, resources are available through the DNR, helping rode enthusiasts navigate the sport responsibly.
