Ananda Lewis, the former MTV VJ, has passed away at the age of 52. Her death was announced by Lakshmi Emory, who referred to Lewis as a “phenomenal sister” in a heartfelt Facebook post. While Emory shared the news, she did not provide details regarding the cause of death.
Lewis gained popularity in the late ‘90s as a host of “Total Request Live” and the video countdown show “Hot Zone,” later achieving further recognition with “The Ananda Lewis Show” in 2001. Lewis battled Stage 3 breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2019. Instead of undergoing a recommended double mastectomy, she chose alternative treatments, including dietary changes and various therapies, aiming to manage her condition. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her tumor’s growth prompted her to explore genetically targeted chemotherapy, designed to kill cancer cells while preserving healthy ones.
Despite her efforts, a PET scan in October 2023 indicated that her cancer had advanced to Stage 4. Lewis subsequently sought treatment at an integrative medical facility. In an op-ed for Essence published in January 2025, she expressed regret over not prioritizing mammograms due to fears of radiation. She emphasized the importance of women’s health education and prevention, urging others to not follow her path. She reflected, “If I had known what I know now 10 years ago, perhaps I wouldn’t have ended up here,” encouraging women to educate themselves about breast cancer prevention and treatment options.
Lewis leaves behind a legacy of advocacy for health awareness, urging women to take proactive steps in managing their health and seeking information.
