Democratic Party of Wisconsin Set to Elect New Chair at State Convention
MADISON, Wis. — This weekend, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin (DPW) will conclude its chair race at the state convention in Wisconsin Dells. Current Chair Ben Wikler announced in April that he would not pursue a fourth term following his defeat in the contest for Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
Party members will select from three candidates: former DPW Executive Director Devin Remiker, Milwaukee strategist Joe Zepecki, and La Crosse County Democratic Party Co-Chair William Garcia. While each candidate offers a unique approach, they share a commitment to building on Wikler’s achievements.
Wikler, who described his tenure as “the honor of his life,” has endorsed Remiker for the position. Remiker acknowledges the challenges facing the party, particularly in regaining trust among rural voters and communities of color. He believes there are positive signs despite losing Wisconsin in the recent presidential election, citing the state’s relatively narrow margin compared to Michigan and Pennsylvania.
Zepecki, who has campaigned for Democratic candidates nationally, stresses the need for a more resonant messaging strategy, noting the party’s repeated losses to Donald Trump and the continued representation of Ron Johnson in the U.S. Senate. He advocates for transformative changes within the party.
Garcia emphasizes the importance of local voice and strategy, asserting that county party leaders should have a decisive role in shaping initiatives and messaging to ensure grassroots perspectives inform the party’s direction.
The DPW’s 2025 Convention will take place on June 14 and 15 at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells. As Democrats prepare to move forward, the choice of new leadership will be pivotal in shaping the party’s future in the state.
