Warhawks Clinch WIAC Softball Championship with Victory Over UW-Stout
MENOMONIE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater solidified its dominance in softball by claiming the outright Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular-season championship, defeating UW-Stout 3-1 at Alumni Field on May 4. This victory marks the Warhawks’ 16th regular-season title and their eighth in the last eleven years, underscoring their sustained excellence in the sport.
With a remarkable record of 35-5 overall and 12-2 in the WIAC, UW-Whitewater has also secured the number one seed for the upcoming WIAC Tournament, set to host the six-team, single-elimination event beginning May 9. Joining them in the tournament are UW-Oshkosh as the second seed, UW-Eau Claire in third, UW-La Crosse fourth, UW-Platteville fifth, and UW-Stevens Point sixth.
In the championship-clinching game against the Blue Devils (13-23 overall, 4-10 WIAC), the Warhawks showcased their offensive prowess. Grace Wickman opened the scoring with a run-scoring single in the third inning. Maggie Ward contributed a key bunt single in the fourth, which set up a scoring opportunity that extended their lead to 2-0. Although the Blue Devils managed a run, Wickman and Ward teamed up again to restore a two-run lead, with Ward driving in another run to finalize the score at 3-1.
Josie Hammen earned the win, improving her season record to 15-1, while Brooke Hock closed the game with two scoreless innings, earning her seventh save. The Blue Devils’ standout performers included Emma Muehlenbeck and Grace Vowell, each with two hits, while Anna Blanford pitched a complete game for UW-Stout.
