Milwaukee VA Clinic May Be Named After Black Woman Who Served in WWII Unit Featured in Netflix Film

Milwaukee Veteran Anna Mae Robertson Honored Posthumously with Proposed Clinic Name Change

Milwaukee’s Anna Mae Robertson, a distinguished member of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion during World War II, passed away on May 30 at the age of 101. The only battalion of Black women to serve abroad during the war, the “Six Triple Eight” made significant contributions in sorting a massive mail backlog for soldiers, enhancing their morale by reconnecting them with loved ones.

In a bipartisan effort, U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore has introduced legislation to rename the women’s clinic at the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Robertson’s honor, proposing the name "Anna Mae Robertson VA Well Women Clinic." This initiative is supported by Republican Reps. Bryan Steil, Scott Fitzgerald, and Tony Wied, as well as Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan, seeking universal backing from Wisconsin legislators.

Moore emphasized the importance of honoring Robertson for her service and called attention to the often-overlooked history of Black women in the military. Robertson was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 2022 for her unit’s efforts. “She should be credited with lifting the stature of this group,” Moore stated, reinforcing the necessity of acknowledging their contributions to American history.
