Immigrant Wrongly Accused of Threatening Trump to Be Released on Bond
Chicago, IL — A Wisconsin immigration judge ruled Tuesday that Ramón Morales Reyes, an immigrant falsely accused of threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump, can be released on a bond of $7,500. The accusations stemmed from a letter allegedly authored by Morales Reyes, which was publicized by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. However, authorities soon discovered that Reyes, who is Mexican and has limited English skills, was framed by Demetric D. Scott, a suspect in a violent robbery against Reyes who forged the letter to strengthen his defense.
Judge Carla Espinoza stated that Morales Reyes does not pose a threat to the community. The 54-year-old, who works as a dishwasher in Milwaukee and is the father of three U.S. citizen children, was arrested after dropping off a child at school. Despite being a victim of crime, he faces immigration challenges due to his undocumented status.
Morales Reyes’s attorney criticized the misinformation and called for a public correction. Meanwhile, Scott is facing new charges for felony witness intimidation and identity theft related to the case. If the government does not appeal, Morales Reyes could be released in the coming days.
