Press Release: Release Granted to Immigrant Wrongly Accused of Threatening Trump
CHICAGO — Ramón Morales-Reyes, an immigrant from Mexico falsely accused of threatening to assassinate former President Donald Trump, has been granted release on bond, a decision made by Immigration Judge Carla Espinoza during a hearing in Chicago on Tuesday. The bond has been set at $7,500.
Morales-Reyes, 54, was initially implicated by a sensational social media post from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, which asserted that he had written a threatening letter. However, investigations revealed that he does not speak or write English proficiently. Wisconsin authorities found that he had been framed by Demetric D. Scott, the individual charged with violently attacking Morales-Reyes and stealing his bike.
Scott allegedly forged the threatening letter in an attempt to exonerate himself as Morales-Reyes was set to testify against him in a separate criminal trial. Judge Espinoza stated during the hearing, “The defendant does not present a danger to the community.”
Following his arrest last month while dropping a child off at school, Morales-Reyes, the father of three U.S. citizen children, has been held at the Dodge Detention Center. Though he is currently without legal status due to multiple undocumented re-entries since immigrating in the 1980s, he has applied for a U visa, which provides protection for crime victims.
Despite Morales-Reyes being cleared of any threats to Trump, Homeland Security indicated intentions to pursue immigration actions against him. Additionally, the controversial post by Noem, which incited public outcry, remains online.
"Now that the truth has been proven, I ask from the bottom of my heart he gets the justice he deserves," stated Morales-Reyes’ daughter, Anna. Scott, facing charges of felony witness intimidation and identity theft, remains incarcerated.
