Press Release: UW-Superior Expands Athletic Offerings with New Sports
The University of Wisconsin-Superior (UW-Superior) has announced an exciting expansion of its athletic programs, adding one varsity sport and two club sports to its lineup. Starting in the 2026-27 academic year, the university will introduce women’s lacrosse as its newest varsity NCAA sport, with plans for the inaugural season in spring 2027. Simultaneously, UW-Superior will launch men’s ice hockey and men’s soccer as club sports in the 2025-26 academic year.
With these additions, UW-Superior’s total number of varsity sports will rise to 20, comprising 9 men’s and 11 women’s teams. The club team initiatives also mark the first time men’s ice hockey and soccer will be integrated into the Yellowjacket Athletics program.
"We are thrilled to expand our offerings to provide more, and new, opportunities for student-athletes," stated Nick Bursik, UW-Superior Director of Athletics. He noted that this growth aligns with the increasing interest from prospective students and the rising popularity of these sports in the region.
Men’s club hockey will aim to compete within the American College Hockey Association (ACHA) and face off against regional peers, while the men’s soccer club will engage in a competitive fall season against local club programs. Both sports will be supported by head coaches, with searches for the initial coaching staff commencing immediately.
The women’s lacrosse program, one of the fastest-growing collegiate sports at the NCAA Division III level, will also undergo a national search for its head coach this spring. Students interested in participating in these new programs are encouraged to fill out prospect questionnaires available on the university’s website.
