Wisconsin High School Basketball Legend Jerry Petitgoue Passes Away at 84
Jerry Petitgoue, revered as the winningest coach in Wisconsin high school basketball history, passed away on June 7 at the age of 84, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy. Petitgoue retired as head coach of Cuba City in 2023 after an extraordinary 52-season tenure, boasting a record of 1,027-249—one of only 20 coaches nationwide to achieve over 1,000 wins.
A devoted mentor, Petitgoue was known for his relentless passion for the game, often engaging with fellow coaches, including Wisconsin’s current head coach Greg Gard, who fondly recalled Petitgoue’s late-night texts about basketball strategies. His teams secured 29 conference championships and made 12 state tournament appearances, clinching WIAA titles in 1981, 1991, and 1998.
Petitgoue’s impact extended beyond victories; he emphasized teaching and personal growth, aligning with his philosophy of "Petitgoue’s P’s": Priority, purpose, passion, pride, and preparation. Celebrated for his dedication to coaching, he also contributed significantly to the Wisconsin State Basketball Coaches Association. The basketball community mourns this loss, recognizing Petitgoue not only as a coach but as an inspiring figure who shaped the future of basketball in Wisconsin.
