Duey Naatz Announces Retirement After 35 Years at UW-Stout
MENOMONIE, Wis. — After a remarkable 35-year tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, athletic director Duey Naatz has announced his retirement, effective September 2. Naatz, the ninth athletic director in university history, leaves behind a rich legacy marked by leadership and the significant growth of Blue Devil athletics.
Beginning his journey in 1990 after serving as a graduate assistant at the University of North Dakota, Naatz held multiple roles, including assistant and head football coach, strength and conditioning coordinator, and physical education instructor. His role as athletic director, starting in June 2010, emphasized student-athlete success and program excellence.
“I am sincerely grateful for the opportunities and support from UW-Stout, Blue Devil Athletics, and the Menomonie community,” said Naatz. Under his leadership, UW-Stout launched new initiatives, such as a scholar-athlete awards event and increased roster sizes, while also adding programs like esports, women’s lacrosse, and women’s flag football. Major facility enhancements, including renovations of the Nelson Field Soccer Complex and stadium turf, further modernized the athletic landscape.
Chancellor Katherine Frank praised Naatz, stating, “He has had a meaningful impact on the Blue Devil athletics program and has shaped our campus community.” Notably, Naatz also made national contributions, serving two terms on the NCAA Division III Football Championships Committee and consulting for various NCAA events.
Naatz, along with his wife Kay and their two sons, looks forward to new adventures. A search is currently underway for UW-Stout’s 10th athletic director, as the community reflects on Naatz’s significant contributions to the university’s athletic success.
