Wausau Paddler Sets New Wisconsin River Speed Record
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – In a remarkable achievement, Wausau’s Andy Nevitt has potentially etched his name in the record books by breaking the speed record for kayaking the length of the Wisconsin River. He completed the journey in an impressive 3 days, 20 hours, and 45 minutes, surpassing the previous record by 5 hours and 37 minutes.
Starting his grueling adventure on Monday at 2:00 PM near Land O’ Lakes, Nevitt paddled tirelessly to Prairie du Chien, arriving at 10:45 AM on Friday. Throughout his journey, he faced considerable challenges, including portaging around 26 dams and managing with only about four hours of sleep.
While Nevitt awaits official confirmation of his record, a documentary crew documented his incredible feat, with plans for a film release later this year. His inspiring determination showcases the strength and spirit of paddlers everywhere.
Congratulations, Andy! For more on this extraordinary story, check out our feature from last week.
