Wisconsin Republican Urges Gov. Evers to Release Interest on Unused Federal Funds

Senator Wimberger Pressures Governor Evers on Federal Funds

(WLUK) — Republican State Senator Eric Wimberger is urging Democratic Governor Tony Evers to transfer over $170 million in accrued interest from unspent federal dollars to Wisconsin’s state treasury. The funds originate from the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, intended to bolster the state’s economic recovery during the pandemic.

Wimberger criticized the Governor, claiming he has unilaterally controlled the funds and has failed to allocate them appropriately. "If he can create his own sources of revenue off federal dollars, we are not Wisconsin; we’re a subsidiary of the federal government," Wimberger stated during a recent Senate committee hearing. He has introduced a bill mandating that the accrued interest be transferred to the state’s General Fund.

Governor Evers defended his administration’s management of the funds while visiting Greenleaf for road improvements. He emphasized that the money has been put toward various state projects, asserting, "What money has accrued… will remain with us."

Wimberger remains resolute, insisting that a concrete plan for the funds’ release is necessary. As the budget cycle progresses, both sides anticipate further debate on the fate of this federal funding.
