Toyota Motor, after pioneering hybrid vehicles with the Prius 25 years ago, is now focusing on expanding its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) lineup. However, growth projections for PHEVs across the industry remain modest, with estimates ranging from 3.3% to 5% of U.S. market share by 2030, hindered by high production costs and consumer apprehension towards plugging in.
Toyota officials emphasize the importance of education regarding PHEVs, suggesting that informed consumers are more likely to choose PHEVs over traditional options. The company plans to enhance its hybrid and PHEV offerings, expecting them to account for over 50% of U.S. sales this year. With hopes of catering to diverse consumer preferences, Toyota views a varied powertrain strategy as key to expanding its market reach in the evolving landscape of electrified vehicles.
