Southwest Wisconsin Technical College Awarded Prestigious Honor

Southwest Wisconsin Technical College Awards National Title for Career-Driven Curriculum

Southwest Wisconsin Technical College (SWTC) has been recognized as the top community college in the United States by the Aspen Institute, garnering a $700,000 prize for its innovative educational reforms. After struggling with accreditation issues years ago, SWTC revamped its curriculum and counseling services to emphasize pathways leading to higher-wage careers.

The college eliminated low-wage majors and introduced training for industry certifications, resulting in its graduates earning an average of $14,000 more annually than their peers. About 50% of its full-time students now graduate within three years—a notable improvement over the national average.

Agribusiness management student Jamin Crapp highlighted the college’s shift to precision agronomy, enabling farmers to learn advanced skills, like drone operation, that directly correlate with higher earnings. The college’s initiatives have invigorated local labor markets, prompting SWTC to advocate for increased wages among local employers.

Leadership aims to sustain this momentum, asserting that the award reflects past accomplishments while serving as a challenge to continue growing and innovating for the community’s future.
