Local Artist Creates Landmark Mural for Wisconsin Badgers Football Program

Madison artist Tony Catteruccia, known for his vibrant aerosol art, has completed a striking mural for the Wisconsin Badgers football program, marking a significant moment in his artistic career. Although not a diehard football fan, Catteruccia felt honored to be commissioned for this project, designed as a backdrop for recruits visiting the campus.

The mural, a massive 12 feet tall by 28 feet wide, was created over five days at Camp Randall Stadium and serves a vital role during the recruitment process, where potential players don jerseys and pose for photos against this eye-catching artwork. Catteruccia expressed his excitement, reflecting on the importance of the Badgers in Madison culture: “The W is very prominent here. You see it everywhere.”

Collaboration with Wisconsin’s recruiting operations coordinator, Marisa Pavone, unfolded unexpectedly after the suggestion was made by a local art supplies owner. The mural features key elements of Madison, including the state capitol, Camp Randall Stadium, and the phrase "On, Wisconsin." Central to the composition is a football player poised for action, symbolizing the electrifying moments of the game.

Despite facing challenges, particularly in rendering the intricate details of the capitol and Camp Randall, Catteruccia relished the artistic hurdles, remarking, "It was intense but rewarding." With a passion for art stemming from his youth and previous community projects, Catteruccia has left an indelible mark on Madison’s cultural landscape, solidifying his role as a key local artist. As the Badgers continue to host recruits, his mural will undoubtedly stand as a testament to the spirit of Badger football and Madison pride.
