John Blackwell Returns to Wisconsin Badgers Basketball
MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin celebrated a significant boost to its basketball lineup as point guard John Blackwell announced his return for the upcoming junior season. After exploring the NBA Draft, Blackwell, a 6’4" standout, opted to remain with the Badgers, a decision anticipated by many after he was not selected for major draft combines and was rarely featured in mock drafts.
Blackwell viewed the NBA Draft process positively, gaining valuable feedback on his skills while enhancing his game in Los Angeles. An honorable mention All-Big Ten selection last season, he averaged 15.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, with a shooting percentage of 45.1%.
With significant roster changes, including graduations and transfers, Blackwell’s return allows head coach Greg Gard flexibility in utilizing him as an off-ball guard, facilitating opportunities for incoming talent. The Badgers’ roster now includes 13 scholarship players, with one spot remaining to fill ahead of the season. Blackwell’s commitment underscores his loyalty to the program that first believed in him, ensuring a dynamic season for Wisconsin basketball.
