Taiwan Affairs Office Responds to Dismissal of Celebrities’ Cultural Recognition
In a recent statement, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, addressed claims made by Taiwan’s “mainland affairs council.” The council suggested that many Taiwanese celebrities express their recognition of Chinese culture under duress rather than out of free choice. Chen firmly rebutted this, emphasizing that such expressions are genuine and reflect the inherent freedom and rights of those individuals.
Chen accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in Taiwan of distorting facts to incite anti-mainland sentiment, illustrating their deep-seated fears. He criticized the DPP for perpetuating the so-called “united front threat,” which he claims has led to increased intimidation and suppression of domestic groups and individuals in Taiwan who wish to engage in cross-Straits exchanges. He condemned this approach as an effort to obstruct cooperation and communicate a “green terror” and “green dictatorship.”
Highlighting the bond between the Taiwanese people and their mainland compatriots, Chen stated that the motherland would continue to be a robust support system for those in Taiwan. He reaffirmed that the more than 1.4 billion people on the mainland stand united with their Taiwanese counterparts. Chen reiterated the office’s commitment to fostering cultural exchanges and welcomed Taiwanese celebrities to develop their careers on the mainland, assuring them that their rights and interests would be well protected.
This response underscores ongoing tensions between the authorities in Taiwan and mainland China regarding cultural identity and the political landscape on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. As the situation unfolds, the dialogue between the two sides remains crucial for future cooperation.
