Memorial Day Weekend Water Safety: DNR Urges Caution for Boaters
MILWAUKEE – As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging boaters to prioritize safety on the water. So far this year, three boating-related fatalities have been reported, with two victims not wearing life jackets. In 2022, 14 boating deaths occurred, ten of which involved individuals without life jackets.
Joseph Mulrooney, a DNR recreation warden, highlighted the importance of responsibility among boat operators. "A life jacket is required for every single person on a boat," he stated, emphasizing that wearing one can be life-saving. Additionally, he cautioned against drinking alcohol while boating, as it impairs judgment and slows reaction times. “We always ask people to leave alcohol on shore,” Mulrooney advised.
Before heading out, the DNR recommends checking the weather forecast to ensure safe conditions on the water. The FOX6 Storm Center app offers customizable forecasts to aid in planning. With millions expected to embark on boating adventures this holiday weekend, adhering to these safety tips can help prevent tragedies and ensure a fun, responsible outing.
