Wausau Man Aims to Set Wisconsin River Kayak Record on Memorial Day
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – This Memorial Day, local endurance kayak racer Andy Nevitt will tackle an ambitious attempt to break the longstanding record for paddling the Wisconsin River. Starting at Lac Vieux Desert Lake and navigating the 424-mile route to Prairie du Chien, he aims to surpass the current overall record of four days, two hours, and 22 minutes, a mark that has stood for three decades.
After racing competitively across the Midwest for about three years, Nevitt, who holds the solo record for the Wisconsin River, has invested significant effort into his preparations, both physically and mentally. This includes mastering nighttime navigation and managing the challenges posed by the river’s 26 dams, which require portaging.
While Nevitt’s physical stamina will be tested, he emphasizes that the mental aspect is equally crucial. "Convincing myself to keep going when exhaustion sets in will be the biggest challenge," he stated. Support from his wife and the paddling community adds motivation to his journey. For those interested in following Nevitt’s progress, updates will be available on his Facebook page as well as live tracking on Raceowl.
