17 Injured in Knife Attack at German Train Station; Suspect Taken Into Custody

A stabbing incident at Hamburg’s central train station has left multiple individuals injured, some critically. The attack occurred around 6 p.m. on the platform between tracks 13 and 14, where a 39-year-old woman, a German national, was arrested shortly afterward without resistance. Authorities reported that a total of 17 people were affected: four sustained life-threatening injuries, six had serious injuries, and seven suffered minor injuries.

Police, reviewing video footage, believe the suspect acted alone and have secured the knife used in the attack. Currently, there’s no evidence suggesting any political motive, and investigations are ongoing, including assessing whether the attacker may be mentally ill.

The scene remained tense hours after the assault, with a high-speed ICE train still at the platform, although it was confirmed not to be part of the crime scene. Railway operator Deutsche Bahn expressed deep shock over the attack, which resulted in the closure of four tracks and subsequent delays or diversions for long-distance trains.

Carrying weapons, including knives, is prohibited at the station and on local transport in Hamburg. The incident drew reactions from officials, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who expressed his dismay and extended thoughts to the victims and their families in a phone call with Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher. The incident underscores concerns about safety in public transport hubs.
