House Passes Major Legislation to Enact Trump’s Agenda, Democrats Warn of Unintended Consequences
WASHINGTON — In a significant political maneuver, House Republicans narrowly approved a sweeping bill early Thursday to advance President Donald Trump’s second-term agenda. Congressman Derrick Van Orden (R-Prairie du Chien) expressed confidence in the passing of the legislation, asserting, “This bill is going to pass.”
The measure, now headed to the Senate, aims to cut taxes by over $4 trillion across the next decade, while adding more than $2 trillion to the national debt. Critics, particularly Wisconsin Democrats, contend that the bill’s new requirements for Medicaid and SNAP could result in 8.6 million people losing healthcare and three million losing access to food stamps. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Milwaukee) condemned the initiative, stating, “There’s nothing beautiful about taking food out of the mouths of our seniors,” and labeled the legislation “heartless and gutless.”
Nevertheless, Wisconsin Republicans hailed the bill as beneficial for the American populace. Rep. Bryan Steil (R-Janesville) expressed optimism about revitalizing the country, while Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) called it a “victory.” Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Minocqua) framed the bill as a chance to reverse perceived detrimental policies under the Biden administration.
As hardline Republicans initially sought deeper spending cuts, they ultimately compromised under pressure from White House officials and House GOP leadership. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) indicated intentions to push for further spending reductions as the legislation moves to the Senate, where revisions are expected.
The forthcoming debate in the upper chamber is anticipated to shape the final form of this contentious legislation.
