Oshkosh Arena Up for Sale Amid Controversy and Hope for New Ownership
The Oshkosh Arena, the home of the Milwaukee Bucks’ G-League team, the Wisconsin Herd, has officially been listed for sale. This comes as local officials express optimism about the facility’s future under new management. Constructed in 2017, the arena has hosted 24 Herd games annually as well as concerts and comedy shows. However, it has faced significant challenges, including bankruptcy and fire code violations.
Greg Pierce, president of Fox Valley Pro Basketball, the arena’s owner, indicated that the property’s management agreement with a new firm influenced the decision to seek a sale. He stated, “This upgrade will translate into a higher profile event schedule for the community,” hinting at a vision to elevate Oshkosh’s national entertainment presence.
The arena has been a focal point of controversy, especially since Fox Valley Pro Basketball filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2019. A creditor lawsuit over construction costs was settled out of court in 2021, allowing the company to emerge from bankruptcy the following year. Additionally, the arena was shut down last year due to fire code violations, raising further concerns about its operational management.
City Manager Mark Rohloff expressed hope for the arena’s future, emphasizing the need for experienced ownership to maximize its potential. He noted the venue’s success and its potential to enhance the Sawdust District on the Fox River’s south shore. Tricia Rathermel, president of the Greater Oshkosh Economic Development Corp., echoed this sentiment, highlighting the arena’s role in enriching community entertainment options.
With local leaders eager for the arena’s transformation, stakeholders remain hopeful that new ownership can reinvigorate the property and the surrounding area.
