Lake Area Technical College Achieves Accreditation for Surgical Technology Program
Watertown, SD – Lake Area Technical College (Lake Area Tech) has announced that its Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology program has received initial accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). This recognition underscores the program’s commitment to high-quality education and rigorous industry standards, according to Lake Area Tech Vice President Cam Corey.
Corey expressed pride in the achievement, attributing it to the hard work of the Surgical Technology team, clinical partners, and college leadership. "We are dedicated to building a program that exceeds national standards," he stated, reinforcing the importance of this accreditation in preparing students for a career in one of South Dakota’s in-demand healthcare fields.
The Surgical Technology program is designed to equip students with essential skills required to become integral members of surgical teams. The curriculum features a blend of classroom instruction, hands-on training in simulation labs, and clinical experience, covering critical areas such as surgical instrumentation, sterilization techniques, anatomy, and operating room procedures.
The CAAHEP accreditation followed a thorough review, including a site visit to evaluate the program’s curriculum, faculty qualifications, clinical partnerships, and student outcomes. "This accreditation assures students, employers, and patients that our program meets or exceeds nationally established standards," Corey emphasized.
This milestone coincides with an expansion project aimed at enhancing the program’s facilities. Plans include three new state-of-the-art simulation labs, additional classrooms, and dedicated support areas, with completion anticipated for the Fall 2025 semester.
