Nate Gustafson, R-Fox Crossing, the bill aims to empower local municipalities to issue new licenses for establishments dedicated solely to cigar and pipe tobacco smoking, while prohibiting cigarette smoking and retail food licenses.
Gustafson, addressing concerns from the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, stated the legislation includes strict guidelines to maintain the integrity of restaurants and ensure safe environments. However, health organizations like the American Lung Association have voiced opposition, citing risks associated with tobacco use.
Cigar bar owner Vanessa Shipley, who operates Maduro Cigar Bar, argues that these establishments foster community and camaraderie among enthusiasts. She acknowledges the health risks but emphasizes her team’s awareness of the environment they work in.
