Canada’s Carney Criticizes King Charles for Remaining Silent on Trump’s Threats

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed strong criticism over Britain’s invitation to Donald Trump for a second state visit, asserting that it undermines Canada’s sovereignty amid ongoing concerns regarding Trump’s remarks on annexing Canada. Since his presidency began, Trump has suggested that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, provoking outrage among Canadians and complicating diplomatic relations between Canada and Britain, who must navigate ties with both nations carefully.

King Charles, as head of state of Canada, has made several gestures to reaffirm ties with the nation, including wearing Canadian medals and referencing himself as the King of Canada. He is set to attend Canada’s state opening of parliament on May 27, marking the first visit of a British monarch to Ottawa since 1977.

In an interview with Sky News, Carney commented on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to invite Trump to London during a recent Oval Office visit, saying, “Canadians weren’t impressed by that gesture… given the circumstance.” He emphasized that such actions come at a time when Canada is clearly addressing issues surrounding its sovereignty, making the invitation seem ill-timed.

Carney secured his position as prime minister earlier this year by promising to confront Trump’s provocative statements. He pointed out that King Charles’s upcoming visit to Canada is deliberate, marking a reaffirmation of Canadian sovereignty.

Starmer, aiming to bolster U.S.-UK trading relations post-Brexit, has emphasized Britain’s security capabilities in dialogue with Trump. In response to Carney’s criticism, British Minister Pat McFadden stated that it is up to each country to manage its foreign relations as it sees fit.
