MADISON, Wis. – The "Spherical White-throated Sparrow" has soared to victory in this year’s Wisconsin Fat Bird Week, securing 72% of the votes in a thrilling final round against the "Rotund Ruby-throated Hummingbird," which received 28%. The competition, hosted by the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin and SOS Save Our Songbirds, ran from May 2-9 and featured a bracket-style tournament reminiscent of March Madness, inviting participants to vote daily for their favorite plump avian.

Notable contenders included the Neckless Northern Cardinal (eliminated in Round 1), Dark-eyed Junco in the Trunko (Round 5), and Even the Enormous Eastern Bluebird (Round 3). Throughout the event, which culminated in intense voting and engagement, the hosts shared insightful facts about Wisconsin’s native birds.

In addition to celebrating these delightful species, organizers encouraged the public to promote bird safety by preventing window collisions, planting native flora, and purchasing bird-friendly coffee. Participants were also invited to enjoy outdoor activities during the Great Wisconsin Birdathon, further connecting the community with its rich avian biodiversity. The event not only brought joy to bird lovers but also raised awareness about the importance of bird conservation in the region.
