Wisconsin Moms Unite for Maternal Healthcare: A Bipartisan Plea for Extended Medicaid Coverage
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – This Mother’s Day, Kateri Klingele Pinell and Ali Muldrow, two Wisconsin mothers with starkly different political views, are advocating together for a common cause: extending postpartum Medicaid coverage for new moms in the state. Pinell, a pro-life advocate, and Muldrow, executive director of the Wisconsin Abortion Fund, formed their alliance through Builders, a nonprofit civic initiative promoting bipartisan policy dialogue.
Despite significant ideological differences, both women agree on the urgency of passing Assembly Bill 97, which seeks to extend Medicaid coverage for postpartum parents from 60 days to one year. “When we talk about a full year, we’re discussing necessary support,” emphasized Pinell, who benefits from Medicaid’s assistance while pursuing her education as a single mother.
Muldrow shared her own challenges navigating healthcare as a young mom living in poverty, highlighting that this legislative change could foster a more compassionate environment for many families. Their joint campaign, “Medicaid for Mother’s Day,” aims to garner support from lawmakers, particularly Assembly Speaker Robin Vos. They have garnered substantial backing, including from many Republican lawmakers, as nearly 73% of constituents express support for the proposal.
