Standoff in Fredonia Concludes with Arrest After 37-Hour Siege

FREDONIA, Wisconsin — A tense 37-hour standoff in the Village of Fredonia ended peacefully on May 12 when authorities apprehended a man who had barricaded himself inside his home armed with automatic rifles. The situation began late Thursday night when residents reported gunfire coming from the residence on Fox Glen Road. The homeowner, contacted by authorities, indicated he would shoot anyone who approached.

Neighbors were advised to shelter in place due to the high-powered firearms involved. "I was scared to death," said resident Joan Gaedtke, expressing concerns for her safety. By Friday, the man remained uncooperative and threatened law enforcement, vowing to escalate violence.

Eventually, on Saturday morning, law enforcement deployed "non-lethal tactical resources," prompting the suspect to surrender around 10:50 a.m. He was taken into custody and evaluated for minor injuries and mental health issues. The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that criminal charges are forthcoming.

Sheriff Christy Knowles praised the community’s support during the incident, saying the carefully measured response was crucial for ensuring safety. Local businesses and residents contributed food and refreshments to law enforcement, reinforcing community solidarity in tumultuous times.

All affected roads have since reopened, allowing residents to return home.
