Shenzhen Unveils New Science and Technology Museum Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects

Shenzhen, China – The grand opening of the Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum, an architectural marvel crafted by Zaha Hadid Architects, marks a significant addition to the Guangming District. Positioned within the dynamic Greater Bay Area, an emerging center of technological advancement, the museum aims to serve a population nearing 100 million.

This innovative institution boasts a spaceship-like design with a striking spherical volume that faces the city. Extending westward into an adjacent science park, it features a series of outdoor terraces that seamlessly connect with the lush green surroundings. These terraces function as extensions of the museum’s interior galleries, all organized around a central atrium that fosters community engagement.

Spanning over 128,000 square meters, the museum houses an impressive array of facilities, including 35,000 square meters of exhibition space, 6,000 square meters for immersive theaters and cinemas, as well as 5,400 square meters dedicated to research laboratories and educational initiatives. The museum emphasizes environmental sustainability, striving for the highest three-star green building rating in China. Its design incorporates passive environmental strategies, such as minimizing solar heat gain and employing a ventilated facade system, alongside grey-water recycling and rainwater collection systems to reduce water consumption.

The building’s aesthetic is distinguished by a dual-colored stainless-steel exterior that transitions from deep blue to grey, echoing the movement of celestial bodies—a hallmark of Zaha Hadid’s visionary style. Advanced digital technologies, including Building Information Modeling (BIM) and 3D scanning, played crucial roles in realizing its complex architectural forms.

The Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum is set to become a vital civic space, supporting research, education, and innovation in one of the world’s fastest-growing technological regions.
