Wisconsin AG Josh Kaul Challenges Trump Administration in Electric Vehicle Funding Lawsuit
Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul has initiated his 16th lawsuit against the Trump administration, this time targeting cuts to federal funding intended for electric vehicle infrastructure. During an interview on WPR’s "Wisconsin Today," Kaul emphasized that Congress allocated over $60 million to Wisconsin for this purpose, asserting that disregarding this funding undermines the rule of law.
Kaul pointed out that the Trump administration’s refusal to release these funds violates the democratic process, stating, “The president’s job is to faithfully execute the laws.” This legal action joins a growing list of lawsuits, including a recent challenge with 19 other attorneys general regarding cuts at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which have significant implications for public health initiatives in Wisconsin.
In addition to the electric vehicle infrastructure lawsuit, Wisconsin is involved in various other legal battles against the Trump administration, including challenges to funding cuts for AmeriCorps and education agencies, as well as an executive order altering national election laws. The state has seen its involvement in such lawsuits double since March.
Kaul highlighted the importance of these legal actions, stressing the negative impact of the administration’s decisions on public services in Wisconsin, particularly on initiatives aimed at reducing lead exposure in schools and preventing youth tobacco use. In a recent successful step, a preliminary injunction was granted against proposed funding cuts to key services, which Kaul labeled essential for community development.
Kaul voiced concerns over political backlash against judicial rulings that favor the lawsuits, underscoring the critical nature of upholding the separation of powers. “It’s important that Congress steps up for the rule of law rather than attacking coequal branches of government,” he remarked, calling for a return to principles of liberty and democracy inherent in the nation’s foundation.
