Sen. Amy Klobuchar: Democrats Would Have Benefited from a 2024 Primary

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) expressed that the Democratic Party might have benefitted from holding a primary in the lead-up to the 2024 election. Reflecting on former President Biden’s decision to suspend his campaign and endorse then-Vice President Kamala Harris, Klobuchar acknowledged that hindsight offers clarity, saying, “Yes, we would have been served better by a primary.” However, she emphasized her focus on moving forward and addressing American issues in light of a Trump administration.

Addressing concerns about whether Harris’s loss to Trump indicates that women can’t win presidential elections, Klobuchar expressed hope that this is not the case. She highlighted that women have successfully led other countries and represented significant victories in U.S. elections, pointing to successful female candidates in various states and Senate races. Klobuchar remarked, “If it was easy running as a woman, we could play the game ‘Pick your favorite woman president.’”

When asked about her potential candidacy for the presidency, Klobuchar was non-committal, stating, “I am focused on my job right now.” As a key Senate leader, she remains dedicated to ensuring that constituents have access to essential services like Medicaid and Social Security while addressing economic challenges. Klobuchar’s presidential aspirations could be influenced by a competitive field in the 2028 Democratic primary, which may include former rivals and other prominent figures like Govs. Gretchen Whitmer and Gavin Newsom, as well as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Ultimately, Klobuchar seeks “a better America,” indicating her desire for change in leadership.
