Listeria Outbreak Leads to Hospitalization of Over 10 People in California and Nevada

A listeria outbreak in California and Nevada has led to the hospitalization of at least 10 individuals, prompting an investigation by the FDA and CDC. The outbreak is linked to ready-to-eat foods produced by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC, which is based in San Fernando, California. The company has voluntarily recalled over 80 products, including snack boxes, sandwiches, and pasta, with best-by dates ranging from April 22 to May 19. These items were distributed across multiple states, including Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington, and were sold in various venues such as hospitals, hotels, convenience stores, and airlines.

The FDA and CDC initially began their investigation into this listeria outbreak in 2024, but were unable to identify the source. The investigation resumed in April 2025 when listeria was detected in environmental samples taken from Fresh & Ready Foods during routine inspections. Whole genome sequencing was used to connect the listeria strain found at the company to the illnesses reported.

Fresh & Ready Foods has reportedly taken corrective actions, including the removal of equipment to enhance food safety as per FDA guidelines. Among the 10 hospitalizations, eight occurred in California and two in Nevada. Symptoms of listeriosis can manifest within two weeks after consuming contaminated food, but can appear anytime from the day of ingestion to ten weeks later.

The FDA advises consumers and retailers who purchased the recalled products to thoroughly clean and sanitize affected areas, as listeria can easily spread. At-risk groups, such as pregnant women, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems, are particularly urged to seek medical advice if they experience symptoms like fever, nausea, or muscle aches.
