Youth in Northwest Wisconsin Encounter Obstacles in Accessing Mental Health Support

Barriers to Mental Health Support Continue in Northwest Wisconsin

SUPERIOR, Wisc. (Northern News Now) – Residents in northwest Wisconsin face significant barriers to accessing mental health support, particularly for youth, due to long waitlists, insufficient funding, and limited provider networks. Chrissy Barnard, Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Lake Superior South Shore, emphasizes the reactive nature of the current mental health system, highlighting a lack of preventive education and funding.

Currently, wait times for mental health services hover around eight months, with historical peaks of 16 months, causing exacerbation of mental health symptoms during this critical period. Many individuals find the emergency room as their only option for immediate care, reflecting the dire situation.

Barnard cites inadequate Medicaid reimbursement rates in Wisconsin as a crucial factor driving away providers, especially compared to neighboring Minnesota, which offers better compensation and thus attracts a stronger workforce.

Personal experiences, such as those shared by former paraprofessional Deanna Ellis, illustrate the challenges families face in securing insurance-covered support. Despite the community’s strengths, residents stress the urgent need for improved mental health resources to address growing concerns. Experts recommend reaching out to trusted individuals if feeling overwhelmed.
