Trooper Dismissed in Karen Read Investigation Demonstrated ‘Honor and Integrity,’ According to Supervisor

During the retrial of Karen Read, a former Massachusetts state trooper’s conduct became a focal point, particularly his handling of the investigation into the death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe. Read, 45, faces charges of second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of a fatal collision, stemming from an incident in January 2022. O’Keefe, her boyfriend, was found dead in a yard after allegedly being struck by Read’s vehicle.

Defense lawyers extensively questioned Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Yuri Bukhenik, Proctor’s supervisor, about Proctor’s alleged misconduct, including derogatory comments about Read. Bukhenik acknowledged his own disciplinary measures related to Proctor but insisted that Proctor carried out the investigation with “honor and integrity.” He argued that inherent biases did not impact the investigation’s outcome.

Proctor, who was discharged following misconduct allegations raised in Read’s first trial, has not yet testified in her retrial, leaving questions about his potential role in the investigation. Read’s defense contends she is a victim of a conspiracy meant to frame her for O’Keefe’s death, asserting he may have been assaulted prior to the collision.

The first trial concluded when jurors could not reach a verdict after nine weeks of testimony. Defense attorneys have criticized Proctor’s investigative methods, suggesting he manipulated evidence. They referenced deeply unprofessional communications he had regarding Read, including disparaging remarks about her health condition.

Despite his involvement, Bukhenik testified that he did not believe Proctor’s actions compromised the integrity of the investigation, maintaining that the evidence clearly pointed toward Read’s guilt. The prosecution and defense continue to navigate this complex case in a high-stakes retrial.
